The Joe Vieira Park is located on the West Bank of Demerara in Region 3 on the former Plantation Meer Zorgen and was designated as a park in March 1982. It was generously donated to the Government as a gift to the people of Guyana by its former owner Mr. Joseph Rudoph Vieira AA (1920-2005). Over the years Joe Vieira Park provided a place of relaxation and recreation for the public, particularly during the Easter season when thousands of people use the park to raise their kites.
In January 2022, Guyana and China signed an implementation agreement for the China -Guyana Friendship Initiative which will see the transformation of the park to benefit the health and wellbeing of Guyanese, by providing a space like the National Park in Georgetown. This project is estimated to cost between US$8 to US$12 million dollars. The China-Guyana Friendship Joe Vieira Park Project is a reflection of over 50 years of diplomatic relations between Guyana and China.
